Programs
ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) mission is to work to protect New York State wild lands and waters by promoting responsible outdoor recreation and building a statewide constituency of land stewardship advocates. Niagara Frontier Chapter of ADK, founded in 1971, has a proud history of adhering to our main chapter’s mission which are reflected by the interesting and educational programs that also address the concerns of our local Western New York Community. The 7:30 pm main program runs approximately 45 minutes and includes an interchange of questions and answers.
A sampling of topics of past programs includes noted university scholars, environmental and conservation advocates (water, land, air, climate change), local nature preserves, land conservancies, county and state parks, wild edible plant identification and herbalist experts, governmental protection agencies and state forest concerns, diversity and cultural advocates, high peak mountain climbers, SAR (Search and Rescue), gardening, sustainability, and invasive plants awareness. Members are urged to contact any chair with ideas for programs they feel would interest our chapter.
Education
From October through May (except for our holiday party in December), the Niagara Frontier Chapter holds a 45 minute educational workshop beginning at 6:15 pm, prior to our 7:00 pm general meeting. Our members oftentimes head these workshops sharing their knowledge and expertise on diverse topics. We also reach out to organizations throughout the WNY community to educate our members. In the past, we have had workshops on birding, what to wear and pack for all season outings, yoga and stretching for winter activities, cross country skiing, compass and navigational skills, backcountry recipes, local animal rehabilitators, naturalists, local published authors, environmentalists and urban planners.
Our workshops are interesting, informative, and at times, quite entertaining. Check out our monthly newsletter for the education workshop topic of the month. If you have any suggestions for further topics that would benefit our members, or, if you would like to present your own workshop, please feel free to contact our Educational Chair.
