Zoar Valley Logging Area
October 12 @ 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Join hike leaders Pam and Lynn at the Wickham Road, Multiple Use Area (MUA public land enjoyed by hikers, hunters, all season activities). It has been designated by the NYSDEC, District 9, for clear cut logging. We’ll tour much of the 92-acres of diverse ecology of beautiful native trees and plants that will be forever changed if the DEC accomplishes their proposed logging. This logging idea is a project devised by NY/CT Audubon and NYSDEC Region 9.
Come with your questions, take pictures, and enjoy the company of fellow hikers. Marvel at the majestic black cherry, tulip, maples, and evergreens and see the number of trees spray painted (orange and blue) which indicate planned logging. This hike is intended to provide possibly your last chance to see this beautiful property and also to give you an idea of the magnitude of devastation that will occur if the DEC proceeds with their yet-to-be-approved logging plan. We’ll hike along the border of the designated MUA and the Unique designated area which is near the Zoar rim.
Wear hiking shoes, wear orange if you have it (squirrel season and big game bow season), appropriate seasonal protective clothing/bug spray for ticks, water, bag lunch, hiking poles for stability (we’ll be hiking in a trail-less area). We can also discuss an after hike gathering at the Zoar Valley Inn.
Carpooling to the Wickham Road location is suggested; please contact Pam at
[email protected] for driving directions to the 9am carpool spot in West Seneca. If going directly to Zoar at 10, Pam will provide GPS coordinates. Email Pam with your RSVP and include your telephone number (important for cancellation/questions).
